Some guy decided to drop a comment about British electronic music being the end all be all and IDM is just sad Americans that can not pull off what the British do. What the fuck is that???????? You can tell the true poseurs by how much emphasis they put on the pissing match. Us vs. them? who made this sound first? Who has more obscure influences? WHO THE FUCK CARES???????????

The Brits got good shit. There is no denying that, but as much as I love british electronic music I still see more roots in Germany. Stockhausen, Can, Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Krautrock in general, german techno(minimal and otherwise), Einsturzende Neubaten,DAF...etc. These are not small figures in the evolution of electronic music. If the guy is gona play the pissing match game he really may be out of his league on this one. At the end of the day it really does not matter. A lot of great music comes from everywhere. I have heard shit made on a gameboy that had more soul than over produced slick brit shit any day of the week. It's the man(or woman) not the gear.

It's all pretty much bullshit. The problem with most knowledgeable music collector scum is they care more about things that have very little to do with the actual music. I am a music geek to the extreme, but I steer clear of the music snobbery. I like what gets me off and that happens to be a lot of stuff. An adventurous music palette does not necessarily mean one has an obligation to music elitist. People like what they like. That is different for everyone. That being said...snifff.....I want to post something that gets me off. A wonderful documentary on The Breakcore scene called Notes on breakcore. It's a few years old, but not enough folks know about this stuff. It's truly electronic music for hardcore fans. I am playing a gig with Vorvadoss and Akkolyte tonite at The Lounge. I am gonna play a lot of Breakcore and Digital hardcore. All loud, fast, pissed off electronic music.

Daniel and I(Wanz) spent the afternoon playing Piano and Flute with my laptop and we came up with this little diddy. The remix really takes off in the second half. I had to edit it down to under 5 minutes for the contest. Our version was actually around 8 minutes. The full version will be on an upcoming A Stereo on Strike mixtape. Enjoy. Cheers!!!!

I remember the first time I saw this Kraftwerk Beat Club footage. My bandmate had a vhs bootleg of a bunch of Beat Club performances. I was already into Neu and La Dusseldorf at the time, but I had never actually seen any krautrock footage at the time.that bootleg tape had CAN, zappa, Captain beefheart, Velvet underground and of course an early version of kraftwerk with Klaus Dinger on the Drums, Michael Rother on Guitar and Florian Schneider-Esselben. Rother and Dinger left Kraftwerk to form the infamous "Neu". I was a Neu fan for years before I even knew they were actually a band. One of my favorite songs on Ciccone Youth(Sonic Youth side project) was "2 cool rock chicks listening to Neu". A few years later I actually heard my first neu Bootleg. The repetiton, the moterik beat, the doney guitars. Klaus's solo efforts as La Dusseldorf were just as great. In the mid 90's you could throw a rock and hit a drummer playing a "neu" beat. He will be missed.

Gerard Hanson was born in 1972. He hails from the unlikely environments of Dallas, Texas USA. Little is known about this producer who seems to have Scandinavian roots. His productions have reflections with Basic Channel/Chain Reaction sound. His main inspirations are Juan Atkins and Derrick May. His music also has influences from Stefan Robbers, Red Planet and Carl Craig. He found a way where everything came together: Deepness, Minimalism and Soul, the Detroit-Berlin connection. In 1994 Gerard Hanson and Dan Kurzius started ‘Hardsync’, a Magazine dedicated to electronic music reviews and artist interviews. It has been defunct since 1996 as a result of a computer crash. Hard Sync was an outlet for several Texas-based electronic music enthusiasts to reach out to others around the world that shared similar musical interests. He released his first 12" in 1995. Ever since his debut 12" on Matrix in 1995. From 1995-1997, he released 5 ep’s, and then only 2 more in the next 6 years until 2005. The reason he produced so infrequently was because when his first releases came out, the tracks were licensed to some big releasers and he did not get paid for them. After that some other labels approached him but just wanted more of the same and didn't really seem to understand his sound. They just wanted more of the same sounds. After that he stopped releasing music and produced only for his personal usage. After a couple of years the label Down Low convinced him to pick up his producing again. He is very careful about sharing his music with the rest of the world. In the last decade he only used the aliases Convextion and E.R.P. (Event Related Potential). E.R.P is an electro-edged moniker. Gerard has remained willingly anonymous since his debut in 1995, but he came out of obscurity for a debut European Live performance in London in April 2006. Why he remains unknown is a mystery. In the future we will hear much more from this producer.

If you've been raised on a diet of Basic Channel, Maurizio, Deep Chord, Carl Craig, Model 500 and so on, no doubt this album will have been top of your wishlist for the last decade. Gerard Hanson, aka Convextion, has allowed only four EP's baring his name to be given a release since his seminal debut twelve dropped on the Matrix label all the way back in 1996. That's a measly 11 tracks in ten years - and what tracks..some of the finest, most soulful Techno ever produced. To suddenly be given 8 new tracks from the guy could hardly be more exciting - coupled with the hightened activity over at Berlin's Hardwax and all its connections to the hallowed Basic Channel, plus the first rumblings of new material from Rod Modell's Deep Chord, 2006 may just end up being remembered as the year Techno went way deep again.

MELODICA FEATURE: Yells at Eels/Akkolyte/Life-Death Continuum(The Gonzalez family)

Yells it at eels is Dennis Gonzalez with his two sons Stefan and Aaron Gonzalez. One of the few free-, ethnic-, and improvisational-jazz groups in the North Texas region. Amazing since they hail from the same region as the likes of Ornette Coleman, Charles Moffett, Ronald Shannon Jackson, and Prince Lasha. They started playing in 1999 and are still going strong. So far they have released three CD's, the debut cd entitled "Home", a double disk titled "Pictogram/Home Away From Home", and the most recent release, called "Geografia. Yells at Eells is by far one of the most overlooked outstanding acts in the area. If One incredible ensemble was not enough Stefan and Aaron also play avant grindcore whatnot as Akkolyte. Aaron is also playing with his band Life Death Continuum on friday at melodica. Dennis and stefan will be sitting in with Subkommander on the same night. I could gush about how incredible this family is, but I would be better off letting the music speak for itself.

MELODICA FEATURE: THE FRENZ - PSYCHOMAGIK EP (VERSION 1.0)

For those that don't know The Frenz started out as a project to gather all of my favorite studio experiments of the past 10 years and bring them together under one umbrella of music. I ended up with enough material to fill 6 ep's that will come out over the first half of this year. In the studio so far I have done the bulk of the work, but in the live context we have solidified into a "real" band bringing new life to all of the material. I imagine the next batch of material that we record as a band will push the vision even farther.

I have had a lot of trouble getting this record mastered correctly. It was supposed to be ready a month ago. Since Melodica is this week I decided to post a pre release version of the "Psychomagik" ep. It may sound a little different after it has been properly mastered and I have a nasty habit of changing things up to the last minute so I doubt the CD/vinyl version will sound just like this, but this is pretty close. Enjoy the music and enjoy the festival. Cheers!!!

DragonMan got hooked onto electronic music right about the turn of the millenium, listening to The Crystal Method and old Radio1 Oakenfold essential mixes... Now-a-days, after a long journey thru trance, breaks, D'n'B, and the depths of Aphex Twin-style EDM, he has stumbled upon "Dubstep". After listening to DJ's such as Joe Nice, Mary Anne-Hobbs and N-type throughout '05/'06 he bought his first batch of tunes and hasn't stopped since... In Sep '06, he began broadcasting weekly on a UK-based garage station, Rampage Radio, as the only dubstep contributor. Shortly after he began a 2nd show on Belgium-based Reload Radio. By May '07, he was offered a slot on SUBFM, UK's highest rated dubstep-only station and voted Best Radio Station of 2007 by the dubstep community. DragonMan now aims to get the heavy beats, bass and boom of dubstep out into DFW via his monthly at The Absinthe Lounge, sets at Dub Assembly events, house parties or whereever else has a mighty enough soundsystem for all the bass weight!!

Gerard is currant-ly raisin hell and heaven with SWIRVE (Gerard and Chris Curiel on trumpet/electronics) which is 50% composed 50% improvised music with one CD called Music For Inconsequential Behavior. The TIDBITS : me on convoluted drumkit & assistant MC, Kenny Withrow on gtrs/electronics/machines/gizmo-ologies, and Kim Corbet on keyboards, occassional trbn, MC, toys, lots of wires poking out of blinking boxes) which is 100% improvised music with 3 CD's : Impossible Music, Bunk As Pitch, and Bobbing For Fries. Gerard is also the composer and "Drummer A" for a 6 piece gloriously on-off 2 drumset band called Magga. He was playing with the Astro Jazz Quartet until recently on top of all that. Busy guy and a great musician. One that has been criminally overlooked until recently.

Gerard will be performing with Tidbits at the All ages show in between Vorvados and Akkolyte. He will be performing with Swirve on Saturday at Avenue Arts at 8pm. A great way to kick off the day of shows.

All I can say about this band is that I have never seen anything like this since I last saw them and I don't really expect to ever see anything like them again. I equate the experience to actually meeting real Space Aliens and told the secrets of the universe. Similar to the experience I had the first time I saw The Holy Mountain. Light Bright Highway cannot be explained in words. There sound is so cosmic that it cannot even properly be captured onto tape by any technology that exists on this planet. The recordings are good, but just not the same. For those that remember them this is a major highlight of the festival. Before there was Mogwai, Bardo Pond, Mono or even Godspeed You Black Emperor there was Light Bright Highway. everyone else is still trying to catch up.

Formed in '91 these Texans've slogged their way round local environs. Live performances seem to portray the band scything through one looooong instr. Piece that's stuffed to the gill-flaps with colossal peaks ‘n' troughs sandwiched ‘tween ambient thrum, the band's minds hopelessly lost meanwhile in the mire they've created. So… starting from near silence a vast outpouring and slow and eerie codas seep forth, unfolding in their own time – which they have the ability to stretch at will. Light Bright Highway are truly marathon in isolation.

Moon Glory And The 7th Sun begins with several minutes of barely audible guitar-and-bass murmuring, creating agonizing suspense. The players trace the silhouette of a gorgeous tune: most majestic, poignant and blessed-out. When they finally up the volume and intensity, the music's surging momentum will have your eyes doing 360s. Dwyre's guitar both spangles pastorally and soars in spaciously flanged arcs, evoking vast swathes of starry void.

LBH realize that restraint often works better than all-out assault. When they do explode, it's with amazing finesse. But rather than exhibiting any new-age stigma, Moon Glory has the air of a solemn ritual.

ight Bright Highway plays songs that last a little longer

Denton's Light Bright Highway is not so afflicted. A typical “performance” – for lack of a better term – by the trio consists of a single piece filled with dramatic de- and crescendos that could give any epic poet a run for his money. Lasting anywhere from 45 minutes on the short end to three hours or more on more adventurous evenings, their “songs” explore territory familiar to artists or more concrete, visual mediums. LBH's pieces recall that narrative aspirations of symphonic composers in scope, those who strive to capture the rich texture of life in sonic landscapes.

That Light Bright Highway arrived at such an extent with its sound independently of a direct set of influences only adds to the credit of the band's intense performances, making a musical allusion particularly difficult. The experience of watching LBH for the first time may be better compared to an experience outside the musical realm. Maybe something akin to watching time-lapse photography of a landscape slowly blooming into its full, color-saturated brilliance, before winding down to its previous dormant state. Maybe not.

Keeping up with him can be a time consuming, yet rewarding venture into sound. As soon as you think you know him and can grasp whats going on, he puts on yet another mask and becomes something else. Always a surprise and never a let down, he gives us what we want but dont expect. A rare stone in todays musical climate, Ken is rolling and collects no moss.---- Kens first recordings were as the guitarist, singer, part time keyboardist and producer of the 90s indi rock band Furry Things. He slowly grew tired of being in a band and started producing a slew of electronic mish mash on his own as Eight Frozen Modules. Starting out with a guitar, half broken sampler (given to him by King Coffee of the legendary Texas band The Butthole Surfers), a drum machine, borrowed synths and a four track, Ken laid down an off kilter mix of electro, abstract hip hop, dub and techno.---- In 1997, Ken moved from Austin Texas to the big city of Los Angeles, California. After releasing a few records as Eight Frozen Modules on various labels such as Trance Syndicate and City Slang, he gave up the 4 track and guitar for a desktop computer and software. Spectrum was the most high-profile and straightforward of the projects undertaken by Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember after the demise of the trance-rock avatars Spacemen 3. As his work as a member of the Experimental Audio Research coterie allowed Kember the opportunity to explore ambient textures and tonal constructs, Spectrum satisfied the singer/guitarist's more conventional pop leanings, while never losing sight of the hypnotic otherworldliness which became his music's trademark and legacy. The name Spectrum initially appeared as the title of the first Sonic Boom solo album, released in 1990 before the break-up of Spacemen 3; a collection of ethereal, nearly formless songs, Spectrum openly acknowledged Kember's debt to Suicide with its cover of the duo's "Rock 'n' Roll Is Killing My Life." Meanwhile, the Kember half of the Spacemen 3 swan song Recurring, with its tighter, more structured songs (like the gentle wash of "Just to See You Smile"), offered an even stronger indication of things to come.

After the break-up of Spacemen 3, Sonic formed Spectrum with guitarist Richard Formby and bassist Mike Stout, along with contributions from Pat Fish (a.k.a. the Jazz Butcher). After a series of singles, the band issued its debut Soul Kiss (Glide Divine), a sprawling collection of tranquil, luminous retro-pop, in 1992. At the end of the year, Formby was replaced by former Darkside guitarist Kevin Cowan, and in 1993, the group released Indian Summer, an EP of covers. After Kember spent much of the next year working on Experimental Audio Noise Research projects, Spectrum -- now rounded out by guitarist Scott Riley, programmer Alf Hardy, and ex-Spacemen 3 bassist Pete Bassman -- released the 1994 LP Highs, Lows and Heavenly Blows, another narcotic collection which explored unique scales and compositional structures. Another layoff followed as Sonic Boom resumed work on his other projects, but in 1996 Spectrum teamed with the Seattle band Jessamine for a joint release titled A Pox on You; at the end of the year, they also issued an EP, Songs for Owlsey. The full-length Forever Alien appeared in 1997. A second collaboration with Jessamine as well as work with the Silver Apples followed.

"Sonic Boom" was the alias of Pete Kember, best known as the singer-guitarist in the legendary hypno-drone unit Spacemen 3. A native of Rugby, England, while attending art college Kember teamed with Jason Pierce to form Spacemen 3, recording a demo tape in 1986; after signing to Glass Records, the group recorded their debut LP Sound of Confusion, for which Kember adopted the name Peter Gunn. By the time of their follow-up EP Walkin' with Jesus, he had rechristened himself Sonic Boom, keeping the pseudonym for the duration of his career. In 1990 he issued his lone solo LP, Spectrum; after the 1991 swan song Recurring, Sonic recycled the Spectrum title as the name of his new band, which debuted with the LP Soul Kiss (Glide Divine). Sonic Boom was also the driving force behind the Experimental Audio Research project, a loose configuration of musicians which included My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields.

NEW SPECTRUM ALBUM INFORMATION

The new Spectrum album has the working title "On the Wings of Mercury" and is going to be released on Space Age Recordings sometime late this year, hopefully. The record is a mix between "Highs Lows and Heavinly Blows" and Spacemen 3's "Perfect Prescription".

Sonic Boom, Alf Hardy, Willie B. Carruthers, Randall Nieman(Fuxa), Rick Maymi and Dean Wareham(Galaxie 500, Luna) are involved with the making of this album.

Silver Apples

Silver Apples were a psychedelic electronic music duo from New York City composed of Simeon Coxe III, who performed as Simeon, on a primitive synthesizer of his own devising, and drummer Danny Taylor. The group was active between 1967 and 1969, before reforming in the mid 1990s. They were one of the first groups to employ electronic music techniques extensively within a rock idiom, and their minimalistic style, with its pulsing, driving beat and frequently discordant modality, anticipated not only the experimental electronic music and krautrock of the 1970s, but underground dance music and indie rock of the 1990s as well.

In the Sixties

The group grew out of a traditional rock back called The Overland Stage Electric Band, working regularly in the East Village. Simeon was the singer, but began to incorporate a 1940s vintage audio oscillator into the show, which alienated the other bands members to the extent that the group was eventually reduced to the duo of Simeon and Taylor, at which point they renamed themselves The Silver Apples, after the William Butler Yeats poem The Song of the Wandering Aengus. The arsenal of oscillators used eventually grew, according to their first LP liner notes, to include "nine audio oscillators piled on top of each other and eighty-six manual controls to control lead, rhythm and bass pulses with hands, feet and elbows". Simeon devised a system of telegraph keys and pedals to control tonality and chord changes, and reportedly never learned to play traditional piano-styled keyboards or synthesizers. [1]

They were signed to Kapp Records and released their first record, Silver Apples, in 1968, and from that released a single, "Oscillations". The following year, they released their second LP, Contact and toured the United States. A third album was recorded in 1970, but Kapp was folded into MCA Records, leaving the album unreleased, and the group defunct.

On the debut album, seven of the nine songs had lyrics by Stanley Warren (not Warren Stanley as incorrectly appeared on the re-release of the 1997 MCA CD), including the group's signature song, "Oscillations." Warren, subsequently a published poet, met Simeon and Taylor at the Third Annual Avant Garde Arts Festival in 1968, organized by Charlotte Moorman (who was famous as the "topless cellist"). Soon after, Simeon became acquainted with Warren's early work, and set a poem, "MJ" to music as "Seagreen Serandes." Inspired by Simeon's interest, in the next few months Warren wrote the remaining six songs used on the "Silver Apples" album. Another song, "Gypsy Love," was used in the second album, "Contact." In recent performances, Simeon still plays some of his and Warren's works from the early days of Silver Apples.

Nineties Revival

In 1994, the German label TRC released a bootleg CD of both records, and the intense interest provoked by this release prompted Simeon to reform The Silver Apples in 1996. Very quickly, the first two records were re-released as official records from the master tapes, and Simeon began a tour of the USA with a new Silver Apples band, featuring multi-instrumentalist Xian Hawkins. Eventually, "after much searching", Danny Taylor was located, and a handful of reunion shows of the original lineup were performed. Taylor also had the tape of the unreleased third record, The Garden, in a box in his attic, and the record was finally released in 1998. In the ensuing years the Silver Apples released several albums of new material featuring the touring line-up of Simeon, Taylor and Hawkins: 'Decatur', 'Beacon', and 'A Lake of Teardrops'.

In 1999, their tour van was forced off the road by an unknown driver, breaking Simeon's neck. As of 2004, Simeon was much recovered, but he was unable to play his instrument in the way he used to. He never fully recovered his hand movements, so his keyboard work is much more simple and direct now.

extra info from Elderidge "Meat"kliever:Silver Apples are the first "electronica band". They even predate Kraftwerk(who has cited them as an influence). They were around Andy Warhol's Factory scene in New York in their time. The list of people that cite them as influence is longer than I can even list. It is pretty safe to say that most of the elctronic based bands that you may know of cite them as a huge influence. They were recently invited to play Portishead's All Tomorrow's Parties festival in the UK. We have them booked to headline the Sunday all ages show as well as the friday show with Spectrum and Light Bright Highway.

Sub Oslo came together during the winter of 1996 in Denton, TX with the intention of bringing live DUB music to audiences. Long confined to the studio since the late sixties in Jamaica, DUB was rarely performed live beyond the sound system parties or the extended encores of established reggae groups.
Playing their first show in the spring of 1997 in the basement of the local pizza parlor, Sub Oslo soon became one of the very few American groups to bring this form of reggae to live audiences. While playing as a rock band, incorporating a mix engineer and a live visual artist, Sub Oslo defied any misconception audiences may have previously had about reggae. Improvising on original riddims and melodies, extending some songs up to 20 minutes, they were never played or mixed the same way twice.
A year later work began on the debut 12" for Two Ohm Hop Records. A well received debut, it showcased the groups own style of DUB which showed a progression into the future of sound while staying true to the roots and rich heritage of their predecessors. Within the next few years the group shared the stage with a variety of groups including June of '44, Mad Professor, H.I.M., Steel Pulse, the Make Up, Fugazi, Raz Mesinai, the Earl Harvin Trio, Yeti, DJ Krush and the Roots.
While adding additional members, Brandan Uribe (flute, percussion), Alan Uribe (clavinet, synth), and Ben Viguerie ( piano, synth), the original six, Frank Cervantez (guitar), Quincy Holloway (drums), Miguel Veliz (bass), John Nuckels ( effects, mixer), Moses Mayo (percussion, melodica) and Paul Baker (live visuals), released the full length "Dubs in the Key of Life" on Two Ohm Hop. Clocking in at over 70 minutes with only six songs, Sub Oslo continued to further push the boundaries of dub reggae. Following up with a tour to the west coast, including stops at NXNW and the first Cross Country DUB Summit in San Francisco. The Summit was hosted by the Dub MissionÕs DJ Sep, one of the west coastÕs leading Dub enthusiasts.
Within the next year "Dubs in the..." received great reviews prompting the CD to be released in Germany (on Glitterhouse Rec.) and Japan (on P-Vine) followed by a trip to Tokyo. The next year saw Sub Oslo contribute tracks to the compilations "Dub Life" (on Instinct) and "Babylon is Ours- the USA in DUB" (on Select Cuts) as well as providing music for the X-box game "Brute Force" (designed by Digital Anvil).
Now, in 2003 Sub Oslo has released a second full length CD on their Sueno Recordings label. Titled "the Rites of DUB", this CD further expands on the foundation laid by the previous releases and the past 7 years of hard work. This time including a video playable on Mac and PC featuring PaulÕs visuals with a live track recorded in 1998 in Dallas, TX.
With a fall release planned for Europe and a planned U.S. tour Sub Oslo continues to push forward the limits of Dub music and take it where it never has been before.

There will be features on individual bands and showcases over the next few weeks. $25 3-day Passes will get you into any venue all three days. There will only be 300 3-day passes available. They will be on sale at Good records or participating venues sometime over the weekend. Hopefully by saturday. There will be an indivdual cover for each venue ranging from $5 to $10. There will be more details on that over the next few days.

Single genre DJ'ing is not for me at all. Why limit ones self to one type of music when there is so much good music to be found and enjoy. I have wide array of moods and I need an equally wide variety of music to appease those moods. I also like to spin a wide variety of DJ sets. I came up with this mixtape series after having 6 different DJ sets in one weekend not to long ago for my birthday. Each one called for a different type of set. Each set is named for a perfect time for me to play each one of these sets. In reality depending on the crowd you could kick any of these at midnight. The Coco Machete label is back after a brief hiatus and its coming back inna mean style! I've just recieved the next two EP's and they are KILLER!!

The first one "On Again" by Dog Tag. Dog Tag is actually an artist we are all VERY familiar with, but he's being a secret. This is sraight up crunchy techno with a bite. Everything is very crisp, and up front with a great stompy style beat...think Felix Da Housecat/ Alter Ego kinda vibe. Comes with original version, "Rocker Edit" for all you Justice, Simian hipster types, and remix by Martin Eyerer who delivers a nice minimal builder which is much less aggressive than the original. It should be available by now on all the usual sites. 4.5/5

Next one, Fukkk Off "Im A Freak". Super duper dope!!!! This one goes straight for the skinny jeans crew. Imagine "Hustler" by SMD, being molested by the "Golden Skans" remix and there ya go. Super funky electro rock thats gonna light up some floors. The "Bastian Heerhorst" remix trades in that style for a very Detroit styled sexy stabby keyfest...much like Marc Romboy, or Dave Clarks "Wisdom To The Wise" from years ago. This one will be good for both tech house, deep tech, and pure techno peepz. Be looking for it when it drops!!!! 5/5

She is a mystery and she has a new 12inch single out for "Law of Life". This song also appeared on The Italians do it Better compilation earlier this year and more recently on Lindstrom's Late Night tales mix CD. The lyrics are stark and cold, but there is a sincerity that really cuts through. The song was produced by Johnny Jewel of Glass Candy fame. His understated arrangements really shine in their simplicty. He says a lot with few musical words. I am pretty sure you can find the vinyl at turntablelab.com. Go there and buy it.

Farah let me loose to do a remix for the Stereo on Strike Blog. I kind of took it in a more Dark German(instead of italian) club direction. We hope you dig it.

"Fidget", a word that has struck fear into the hearts of bass cabinets around the world! Booming straight out of London, this sonic marriage of speed garage, tech house, and old school rave culture has arguably become the signature sound of the last couple of years. At the helm of this movement, the boys of the Dubsided Records crew. Say the names Trevor Loveys, Dave "Switch" Taylor, or Herve to anyone with a pair of ears and there is no mistaking what the sound is you're talking about. But what do we really know about these guys? Kinda enigmatic aren't they? We'll wonder no longer. Herve, who probobly holds the worlds record for production aliases, agreed to chat with me about himself...this is what he said:

Red Eye: so for all who dont know, what are your states?

R.E.:Where did the name Herve come from?
H: its from my last name, Harvey

R.E.: How long have you been in the game?
H: about 14 years, i got an Atari when I was really young!

This is a can't miss show for any and all DJ's in town and anyone else that just wants to get down. I am a huge fan of his Innerzone Orchestra which much more along the lines of sun ra/Bitches brew Space Jazz, but he is known much more for being a Detroit Techno pioneer.

Carl Craig was a key player in Detroit techno's second wave, following the futuristic lead of originators Derrick May and Juan Atkins, and eventually collaborating with May. He began recording at the turn of the '90s, using a number of aliases to release innovative ambient, techno, breakbeat and future jazz sounds. One such alias, Innerzone Orchestra, issued "Bug in a Bassbin" in 1992, the track largely responsible for moving drum 'n' bass away from the sounds of hardcore and ragga. Craig heads Planet E Communications, a peerless dance label employing the same eclectic and futuristic ethos that informs his own music. He reconvened Innerzone Orchestra as a jazz/techno combo, recruiting jazz composer/keyboardist Craig Taborn, former Arkestra member Francisco Mora and Planet E signed Matt Chicoine to help him record 1999's Programmed.
With releases under BFC, Psyche, Paper Clip People, 69, Designer Music and Innerzone Orchestra, Carl Craig has more personalities than Sybil. As much as his different guises can confuse though, his music is always easily recognized because whatever he does, it retains that certain Craig-ness. A deep commitment to soul and jazz has always been the watermark of his music. Even when Craig is destroying dance floors with such songs as the classic “Throw,” there is always a subtleness and attention to detail that separates his music from that of the typical Johnny-come-lately dance music producer.

This mix represents my other side. A side that is a little closer to my heart. Minimalistic textural deep techno. No Booty bangers here. No Indie dance anthems. Deep dance for the deep thinkers. The soundtrack to the basement club lit up by nothing more than a single strobe light if anything at all. A lot of this music is a lot closer to what my own electronic music is all about. I have tracks from a few of my favorite artists like Ricardo Villalobos Ellen Allien, Luciano, Ben klock and Pier Bucci. This stuff you pretty much never(or rarely) heard in local Dallas clubs. This is the kind of stuff We are gonna be spinning in the backroom at Zubar on sundays for Robert and Redeye's Liquid Courage night. They spin a wide array of all sorts up in the front room. Alex Ander, Ineka and myself are keeping it deep all night with a wide array of ambient, minimal, tech house and Dubstep. This also the kind of stuff you will hear on the back patio of minc for the October 5th Jeff Samuel show. Stereo on Strike is hosting the patio sets for that gig and we are going deep all night.

Minimal techno features consonant harmony, but most tracks lack functional chord progression, sometimes to the point of seeming atonal. Melodies, when present, are usually short loops of one or two bars, and emphasis is put on creating layers of unique sounds. Musical development is achieved mostly by adding or removing instruments (sounds) on eight-bar phrase boundaries and adjusting sound effects. Music created under this genre can range from melodic beautiful harmonies with a prominent bass line, to glitchy, unstructured, disjointed sounds which are unified to create an organised new track.

In recent years, the genre has taken great influence from, to the point of merging with the microhouse genre. It has also fragmented into a great number of difficult to categorize subgenres, equally claimed by the minimal techno and microhouse tags.

Minimal techno has found mainstream club popularity since 2004 in such places as Germany, South Africa, The Netherlands, Spain, North Italy and the UK with DJs from a wide variety of genres incorporating differing elements of its tones, the famed after-hours club DC10 in Ibiza being one exponent of the genre.

By the second half of 2006, the term 'minimal' had in many ways become contradictory, as it serves as a denominator for the tech house sounds of the moment, many of which should rather be coined as 'maximal' in terms of their sonic content, in contrast to the original stripped down, i.e. minimalist electronic genre.

He has released stuff on a wide variety of techno and electro labels including the very consistent Cologne label Treibstoff. This live PA was brought to us by our friends at the French blog Monsieur P. It was recorded live at the Seattle club Krakt. Maetrik will be headlining our October Stereo on Strike Party at minc and sitting in at Lost Generation in the near future. How this guy has gone so criminally overlooked in our own backyard for so long is kind of shocking. Hopefully that will change in the near future. Watch out because this set is a real banger.

On a totally different take I have a really deep love for Dub and Dubstep. I used to blow blunts to the macro dub infection comps, lee Perry, King tubby and the sort back in the early 90's. A few years ago I got turned onto UK Dubstep instantly connected with it. A lot that stuff really does not sound to different from the sounds were blasting old Denton days. This is the first part of a series of Dub mixes I am gonna be doing over the next month. I have a gig with DJ Vadim in October and I was a bit worried at first since I have really had my head in german Techno lately. This my first mixtape breaking from my 130bpm tempo. I had a blast doing it and still managaed to sneek some Bpitch Control material in the mix and make it work. Very different emotions came to the forefront in this one. A little bit on the dark side. I forwarn this mix gets reallllllly Deeeep!!! Be careful if listening to this while driving. You innerself may float off into the astral plane leaving your body and car to crash off into a ditch. Enjoy!!!!

This mix starts with and ends with 2 tracks off of my alltime favorite album "Struggling, Electric, Chemical" by The Dustdevils. They put this one great album and a few forgettable releases afterwards. Mark Ibold from Pavement played bass in this band before his Pavement days. They were kind of written off as a Sonic Youth knock off, but even though Sonic Youth is still one of my favorite bands I still like this album above everything in their catalogue. In Sonic Youth's favor they were more consistent and made more than just one good record. The rest of this mix is made up of some of my favorite bands that I grew up on. I dig the Disco Punk thing, but I think it's important to remeber the Punk part of that equation. Without bands like the Pop Group, Gang of Four, Wire, Liquid Liquid, James Chance and others there would be no labels like DFA and Kitsune. I threw in Celebration and The Liars to tie the whole mix into the present. Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!

The new Modeselektor album "happy Birthday" features collaborations with French rap hipsters TTC, Thom Yorke, and Otto Von Schirach. It totally kicks mucho ass. These guys have always been one of my favorite Bpitch artist. Their new album easily ranks high as one of the best releases Bpitch has put forth. They put out a kiler mixtape in the Boogiebytes series earlier this summer that is also worth checlking out. They are a hard act to peg which is good. They write bangin techno tracks, but then other tracks sound like a Berlin interpretation of Dirty South hip hop.......which believe it or not is a good thing.

What is IDM? Part 1

In honor of our Laptop Deathmatch #14 we bring you a mini feature on IDM. In my opinion I have always thought they should call it "It Doesn't Matter". "Intelligent Dance Music" always seemed a bit presumptious considering some of the more breakcore and Drill n Bass subgenre's have a lot more in common with testerone fueled hardcore punk than Stockhausen. Here is what Wikipedia has to say:

n 1992, Warp Records released Artificial Intelligence, the first album in the Artificial Intelligence series. The record was a collection of tracks from artists such as Autechre, B12, The Black Dog, Aphex Twin, and The Orb, under various aliases.[2] These artists, among others, would eventually become the main topics of conversation in the IDM List, an electronic mailing list founded in August 1993. The term caught on with the formation of the mailing list. Artists that appeared in discussions on the list included Autechre, Atom Heart, LFO, Aphex Twin and others on Rephlex Records, dub artists such as The Orb, Richard H. Kirk, and Future Sound of London, and even artists like System 7, William Orbit, Sabres of Paradise, Orbital, Plastikman and Björk.

Warp's second Artificial Intelligence compilation was released in 1994, featuring posts from the mailing list in the sleeve notes. During this period the experimental electronic music produced by Warp Records artists such as Polygon Window (an alias of Richard D. James), Autechre, LFO, B12, Seefeel, and The Black Dog, gained popularity among electronic music fans, who were beginning to call the music IDM. Lesser-known artists on the Likemind label and Kirk Degiorgio's A.R.T. and Op-Art labels, including Degiorgio himself under various names (As One, Future/Past, Esoterik). Steve Pickton (Stasis), and Nurmad Jusat (Nuron) were also branded IDM, along with artists like Björk and Future Sound of London. The majority of the IDM during this era was produced in Britain, with a few exceptions, such as Sun Electric from Berlin, coming from other parts of Europe.

In the late 1990s record labels from around the globe began to notice IDM artists pushing electronic "listening music" in new directions. Notable artists from this period include Boards of Canada and others on the Skam Records label, many of which were beginning to use software synthesis, a technology that had recently become possible to use on ordinary personal computers.

During this period, In addition to the growing influence of Warp Records, IDM production greatly increased in the United States. In Miami, Florida, labels like Schematic, AiRecords, Merck Records, Nophi Recordings, and The Beta Bodega Coalition released material by artists such as Phoenecia, Dino Felipe, Machinedrum, and Proem. Another burgeoning scene was the Chicago/Milwaukee area, with labels such as Addict, Chocolate Industries, Hefty, and Zod supporting artists like Doormouse, Trs-80 and Emotional Joystick.

In the new century, the growing popularity of cheap music production software and software piracy allowed many Internet-based artists to publish their own work. The recent surge of software piracy has enabled amateur IDM musicians to use the same high-end programs that professionals use. Developed out of the IDM community during this time was a filesharing program called Soulseek, which underground artists used to share their music and make contacts. The artists Khonnor, Diagram of Suburban Chaos and Venetian Snares went on from Soulseek to earn public acclaim[citation needed]. Soulseek is still associated strongly with the IDM scene through Soulseek Records, which specializes in IDM.

Most recently IDM has been associated with the darker Drum and Bass scene around the world.[citation needed] Notable artists such as Evol Intent, Ewun, Counterstrike and DJ Hidden all use elements of the genre.

IDM has also influenced the rock and post-rock scenes. In particular, Radiohead has cited Aphex Twin and Warp Records as influences for their Kid A album.

Anyone close to me knows I have a bit of an obsession for Ellen Allien. Ever since the first time I heard Berlinette in 2003 I have been hooked. That album and her label Bpitch control completely led me into the world of modern German techno and electro. That same year I also stumbled upon an Apparat 12inch on Bpitch called Koax which really stood out for his fresh approach an adherance to more traditional song structure. A fresh approach that has been consistently refined through his solo releases like the Slizium ep from 2005 and his latest full length masterpiece Walls from this year. Everytime I play a more recent Apparat track in my DJ set someone comes up asks me if this is the new Postal Service. That can be taken 2 ways. I choose to take it as a compliment(not much of a Postal service fan myself, but I dig Dntel. Apparently Apparat gave up Techno in pursuit of more song oriented material. He is a brilliant musician and an ecellent electronic producer. In a better world american indie kids would eat his stuff up like cake. Hopefully some will be smart enough to get Walls out domestically.

Last year Ellen Allien and Apparat brought their talents together to make one of my favorite electronic records of the past decade in the shape of "Orchestra of Bubbles". The record is like a gift that keeps on giving. It rides the fine line between intelligent minimal techno, avant garde electronic music and electronic pop music without ever sounding forced or contrived.

Covering the Basics--- Kompakt Records Part 1

By renaming Delirium into Kompakt in the beginning of 1998, it was possible to manage the problem with the confusing jungle of names, logos, store, labels etc. By giving a long overdue trademark and brand to the meanwhile internationally known Cologne minimal sound. Under the same roof as the already known labels Profan and Studio 1, Kompakt comprises not only label and record store. Due to the constantly rising number of newcomers and new talents and the necessity to offer the utmost freedom for releases of weird, experimental sounds, it seemed only consequent enough to found Kompakt distribution. Strictly following the motto: "From the creator directly on to the turn-tables", Kompakt Distribution supplies national and international wholesalers and retailers with freshly-made home-productions. Moreover, special care is dedicated to the comprehensive back catalogue that has been developed over the years.

The label is based on the Kompakt record store located in Cologne which nowadays also has a webshop. In the last years Kompakt also got the booking agency and distributor for various artists and labels. In 2005 Kompakt started an MP3 online shop for own releases and releases by distributed labels.

Kompakt is owned by Wolfgang Voigt, Michael Mayer and Jürgen Paape.

Over the course of its eleven-year history, KOMPAKT has operated seven other sub-labels: Auftrieb, Freiland, KOMPAKT Extra, KOMPAKT Pop, K2, IMMER, Kreisel 99, Profan and Studio 1. Of these, KOMPAKT Pop, KOMPAKT Extra, K2 and IMMER are still the most productive. Kompakt Extra houses the Speicher series.

Bonus TIPS:
Micahel Mayer and Superpitcher have an album coming out this fall as Supermayer. They are also remixing the WARP RECORDS supergroup BATTLES for their next single in September.

Covering the Basics--- The Fall, Mouse on Mars and Von Sudenfed part 1

We love The Fall. Mark E. Smith has a new band with Mouse on Mars called Von Sudenfed. Their debut album Tromatic Reflexxions is a surprise stunner. For all of the kids into the dance punk revolution(that would be us) this is a dream team combination.

First up we have the Von Sudenfed video for "Fledermaus Can't Get It".

Next up we have The Fall with "Telephone Thing". I remember watching Dave Kendall introduce this video on 120 minute when I was in high school. Most of my friends just could not see what I liked about The Fall. For the most part they just hated Mark E. Smith. As much as I love the band he is a pretty easy guy to not like from what I have seen and heard. I am still a huge Fall fan nonetheless.

And of course a classic IDM banger from Mouse on Mars with the song "Actionist Respoke"

Last but certainly not least a special remix of The Fall classic "Dr.Bucks Letter". If you like Post-Punk and Ed Banger/Kitsune stuff you are gonna love this one.

Covering the Basics--- Justice part 1

Covering the Basics is a column that we will use to showcase some of the the artists played in Stereo on Strike DJ sets. What is more basic than the kings of "blog house" Justice. They are kind of a one trick pony, but somehow they manage to make that trick last over the course of a whole album while still showing diversity. It's techno that punks can even dance to. Unlike the million bedroom imitators popping up since "We are Your friends" came onto the scene, Justice proves on "†" that they are more than just overdriven synths and distortion. They actually write decent tunes with good hooks.
